Northern Central New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association’s 113th Convention

We were welcomed by the Yates County Sheriff and a sergeant from the state police. The sheriff stated Yates County has the largest DWI conviction rate in New York State and we should act accordingly.
With deepest regret I report past president Martin Thomas’s wife passed away shortly before the convention start.
There are ten fire departments in Yates County.
Two percent report- Carl Veltri. All organizations receiving 2% monies should have a direct deposit account. Extra measures are being taken that foreign insurance companies are depositing the proper tax amounts . Nineteen hundred firematic organizations receive 2% funds. The state comptroller will speak at the upcoming convention in Rochester. For more information on foreign fire insurance tax money call the Comptrollers office 518-474-6191 or www.osc.state.ny.us.
FASNY- David Sweet reported the Home is officially in business all forms have been completed and compiled with. FASNY is having a new logo designed. The FASNY office is moving downstairs in their building. Their web page is being extensively refurbished. Information was given on the upcoming convention in August in Rochester.
Firefighter of the year- no applicants.
Membership report- There is 239 organizations in Northern Central 63% are in good standing. Also 2053 members and 73% are in good standing.
The convention parade was on June 7th in Penn Yan and had 23 units.
Convention book- contains 93 pages and memorial pages remembering Ray Emma, Red VerWeire and Gus Weherlin.
Explorer Scouts- A guest speaker spoke on the benefits of being an Explorer. A discussion ensued on Explorers on fire grounds. It was agreed it is an insurance problem and not a Scouting problem.

In the afternoon a Chief’s forum and a Fire/Police forum were held.
That evening an outside banquet was held. It was reported all had a good time but there was an absence of coffee.

Fifty nine deceased firefighter’s names from Monroe County were read at this ceremony. One hundred and seventy firefighter’s names were read in total and 29 auxiliary ladies names read
10:30 business meeting-
Bill Nichols presented a FASNY scholarship award for $2,500 to Anthony Smolos.
FASNY- Dave Sweet spoke on pros and cons of consolidating fire services. This could cost tax payers more money and not save it. Elected officials don’t seem want to recognize the fact that volunteers are not paid.
Election- having no contests the secretary cast one vote for the following.

June 2009 looking for a convention sight.
